The makers of the Unni Mukundan-starrer Marco, directed by Haneef Adeni, have clarified why the film’s uncut version could not be released on SonyLIV as originally planned. In an official statement, the production team cited external concerns as the primary reason for not proceeding with the uncut version. “Initially, we had planned to release Marco’s uncut version for OTT. However, since various complaints were raised to the Ministry of Broadcasting, we were unable to proceed with that version. As a responsible production company, we have ensured compliance with all regulatory guidelines while maintaining the film’s core essence and cinematic experience. Hence, we were forced to proceed with the same theatrical content on OTT as well,” the statement read.
The decision follows Marco’s theatrical run, which was marked by both commercial success and polarising critical reception. As per the makers, the film grossed Rs 100 crore globally and reportedly became the highest-grossing A-rated Malayalam film till date. The film was praised for its technical aspects but faced criticism for its depiction of extreme violence, particularly in its later portions. The controversy surrounding its graphic content may have contributed to the complaints that led to regulatory intervention. Despite the restriction on its uncut release, the makers remain optimistic about the film’s digital reach. “We are excited to bring Marco to a wider audience through SonyLIV and look forward to the continued support of our fans and viewers,” they added.
